The return on Investment of Flirting

CW BOOKINGAN HOTEL

All of us have engaged in flirting at one time or another. Either as the flirt or the object of flirtatious attention. But it probably doesn't occur to most of us to measure the return on investment of flirting.
As an inspirational speaker, the meeting and conference planners that hire me want to know that they are getting value for their money. They may be thinking in terms of ROI, but that can be as difficult to measure as the ROI of flirting. In fact flirting and inspirational speaking have quite a bit in common, including the difficulty of measuring results.
The three main things that flirting and inspirational speaking have in common are: the encounters are relatively brief, fun and make both parties feel good!
A flirt and an inspirational speaker start by putting our best self out there. We turn on the charisma because we want to connect on some level and have an impact. We may or may not be interested in a long term relationship.

The objective of both is to stir the other party's passion... and then go home.
As an inspirational speaker, I really care about people and I want to show you ways to make your life better. But the person who hired me to speak may not have such altruistic goals. They need to rationalize their decisions.
Planners often look at ROI (return-on-investment) to measure the value the speaker brings. If only it were that simple. The problem is that its hard to measure the ROI for inspiration. It is difficult to identify the impact and even harder to quantify it.
Some people may act on an inspirational message immediately. Like my friend Maureen, who heard my recent presentation and started her new business within a week. But Maureen was ready, she just needed a little nudge. Not everyone is there.
Sometimes it will take years for an inspirational message to have its full impact. A simple message can create small changes that take years to compound. Like my high school teacher who encouraged me to live full out.
The audience has to not only be ready for the message but also in a position to do something about it. Like a flirt, an inspirational speaker can get the audience fired up, but they may not be interested in taking it anywhere. They may not be ready to commit for their own reasons.
Just because we can not calculate the ROI, does not mean that a message does not have value. It's a mistake that we've stopped valuing things that JUST make us feel good. We attempt to identify a rational motive and measurable outcome for all of our actions. We go for a massage for the health benefits, we diet to avoid diabetes and we put our kids in structured programs instead of just letting them play. We forget that when we feel good, we are more creative, our relationships are better and we're more productive. The objective of an inspirational speaker is to start that chain reaction by inspiring you.
Inspiration literally means to breathe life into something. As an inspirational speaker that's my job: to bring you life, energy and good feelings. I'll get your engine running and its up to you to take it from there.
I know that my story might inspire you to change the course of your life - if you are ready. Inspirational speakers have often survived some challenging life experience. We lead by example and draw useful life lessons that are helpful in a larger context. We can help put your own life or circumstances into perspective.
I am the parent of a child with a severe disability who uses a wheelchair. AND our family has travelled to six continents. How we achieved this is not only an interesting story but will help you see the poss-abilities in your own life. They apply not only to surviving challenges but to thriving in any circumstance.
Even though it might be hard to measure the ROI, there is still room for the inspirational speaker. Someone who encourages us to be better people. Better people make better decisions, are better workers, and become better leaders building better organizations and communities.
My presentations are brief, fun and make both parties feel good! Maybe I am just a flirt after all?
